Abstract: This study examined the influence of socioeconomic characteristics on credit repayment among
agricultural cooperative members in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Data were collected from 214
members using structured questionnaires and analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple
regression model. The results revealed that gender, education, farming experience, and farm size
significantly affect repayment capacity. Specifically, male borrowers were more likely to repay
their loans (coefficient = 3.627, p = 0.0332), while education positively influenced repayment
behaviour (p = 0.0922). Farming experience was the most significant predictor (coefficient =
22.102, p = 0.0026), and larger farms demonstrated better repayment performance (coefficient =
7.346, p = 0.0798) than smaller ones. The study concludes that gender, education, farming
experience and farm size play crucial roles in loan repayment and recommends that cooperatives
tailor loan products and support services to accommodate these characteristics. |
